I can make links across texts by recognizing connectives or adverbial clauses

In this unit I learnt about what a connective and a adverbial clause is.

A connective is a word that joins sentences together.

An adverbial clause is gives us additional information about e.g. the time, place, or action which is described in the rest of the sentence.

Here is a link to a compare and contrast map of an adverbial clause and a connective
Assesment task

Find fractions, decimals, and percentages of amounts expressed as whole numbers, simple fractions, and decimals.

Extended Abstract  Assessment task: Surfs Up
WALT: Find fractions, decimals, and percentages of amounts expressed as whole numbers, simple fractions, and decimals.
Assessment Task:
Two surf shops in the same part of town sell similar products, but their precise vary. At sale time, both shops are competing for the same customers

Use the Image above to answer the questions in the table

Item
Which shop is the item cheaper?
How much cheaper is the item (when it is on sale) than the other shop?
Show your working out here:
Sweatshirt
The surf shop
2 dollars cheaper
60x0.3 = 18 so then I - 60 by 18 and my answer was 42 so I then did the same with the other question
Jacket
Surf the wave company
6 dollars cheaper
120x0.3 = 36 so then I - 120 by 36 and my answer was 84 so I then did the same with the other question
Jeans
The surf shop
4 dollars cheaper
48x0.3 = 14 so then I - 48 by 14  and my answer was 34 so I then did the same with the other question
Tracksuit
Surf the wave company
13 dollars cheaper
86x0.3 = 25 so then I - 86 by 25 and my answer was 61 so I then did the same with the other question

Today at band Mr Rule gave us a new song to play, this song was the goodnight kiwi song that used to play on the TV every night. This was a challenge because I hadn't played a song like that one. But Mr Rule helped me with it and by the end of the practice I thought that I was getting the song easily. During the practice we also watched the goodnight kiwi add and that was a new thing ti me, I found it quite spectacular. After practice I said to Mr Rule that I thanked him for helping me out with the song. The care value I showed was Active thinking because I got help when I needed it, I also showed the leadership trait of resilient's because when I got stuck I didn't give up.

On Saturday my dad and I went on an overnight tramp. We were going to go to Mt summers and to wool shed creek tramp. When we had got all our stuff packed and were ready to go we drove to Mt summers. It took us about 2 hours in to the hut, on our way in we saw some new and exciting things, we saw a mine that had been used in the 1800's and we also saw a rock tower witch we added a rock to. When we got to the hut we had our dinner and then went to sleep very early! In the morning we set of at about 9:30, on our way out we saw some spectacular views and also some interesting stuff such as a waterfall and a bus stop. When we had finished the tramp I told my dad that I really liked it because I put myself out of my comfort zone and tried a new thing,  I also showed the leadership trait of resilient's because when I got stuck I didn't give up.

Use a range of multiplicative strategies when operating on whole numbers

Use a range of multiplicative strategies when operating on whole numbers

The escape

A prisoner sits in his cell planning his escape. The prisoner is kept in by 5 laser beams, which operate along a corridor. Each laser is switched off at a specific time interval for just long enough to allow a person to walk through. The time between being switched off for each laser is shown below:

  • Laser One = every 3 minutes
  • Laser Two = every 2 minutes
  • Laser Three = every 5 minutes
  • Laser Four = every 4 minutes
  • Laser Five = every 1 minutes

The guard patrols and checks the prisoner each time all the laser beams are off simultaneously. Because each laser only switches off for a short time the prisoner knows he can only get past one laser at a time. He has to get past the five lasers from 1 to 5 in order. Laser One is at the entrance of the prisoner’s cell and laser Five is at the door to the outside. He also knows that if he spends longer than 4 minutes 12 seconds in the corridor an alarm will go off.

Can the prisoner escape without the alarm in the corridor going off? Yes

If he can escape, how many minutes should he wait before passing Laser One? it will take him 33 minutes from when the lasers are all switched off at the same time

How much time will he have after passing Laser Five before the guard raises the alarm? 23 minutes
So in total it will take 4 minutes from 33 minutes after the guard has checked.

Today at 10:20 all of my class had dance, when we arrived Dean that teacher told us to get into lines. The first dance did was the hip hop to Uptown funk, we had finished the whole dance so today was about perfecting it and adding in some little things. Then we moved onto the jive I had to partner up with Liam, we had to do the whole dance from the beginning and then go over one of the steps called over the head behind the back. After our dance time had finished I said to Ashley hat me and her had shown respect by joining in on the dance and listening to Dean.  I also showed the leadership trait of resilient's because when I got stuck I didn't give up.

On Friday I had garden to table, Mr McAven put us into pairs I was with Ashley and Dabok. When we were at the garden Mr McAven gave us a job to do, our job was weeding. We had to weed plant box's 16,14,18 and 20. After we had done that Mr McAven told us that if we wanted to do more we could so we did. Just before the bell rang we got given some little kids to help us the first thing we did with them was get them gloves, then we told them what to do when weeding. After about ten minutes the bell rang so we had to get the little kids back to class and wash their hands. When I was walking them back to their class I asked if they enjoyed gardening and they said yes, I felt very proud of my self for taking part in them having fun. The care value I showed has respect because I was doing what Mr McAven wanted.  I also showed the leadership trait of  Active thinker because when I got stuck I problem solved.

I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions

I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions

Please complete these two problems. You will need to explain how you got the answer.

Question 1
In our household, there are twice as many cats as humans, with sixty legs in total.

How many cats are there to be fed?
12
I got this answer by working out the ratio of cats to humans which was two to one, I then worked out the leg ratio which was eight to two I then worked out the percentage of human legs to cat legs and then applied it to the total number of sixty.

Question 2
Three men run a business together.
The proportion of the profit they each get at the end of the month is based on the proportion of the funds they have invested in the business.
The April profit is shared out so that Al gets one third, Bob gets one half and Chuck gets one sixth.
In May, Des joins the group, investing half as much as Bob invested.
What share of the profit can Des expect to get?
¼ because Bob got half so if you half that it is a quarter.

On Monday it was assembly and the choir was singing in it. When the choir was asked to come up onto the stage everyone walked on, we had a sheet of paper with the lyrics on it so if we got stuck we could look at that. The first song we were singing was How far i'll go and I thought we sang that pretty well. Our second song was Africa and that was spectacular because we had added harmonies into it so that one half of the group was singing high and the other was singing low. After we had finished I told my friend that we had sung both songs really well and that by joining choir we have shown community.  I also showed the leadership trait of  goal focused because when I  was focused on what I needed to achieve.

Today at lunch time I had PALS with Riley, we were doing moon hopper's and stilts. The first thing we did was go to the PE shed and get out the gear. Then we walked down to the area we were playing in and set everything up. As soon as the bell rang one little girl came running to us and followed by her was more and more little kids. Everything was going good we were handing out POZIS and having fun. When it was 10 past 1 we started to tell people that we were packing up. While we were packing up and just about to take everything back to the PE shed Anneke came over to us, she said that she wanted to help carry the stuff back so we said yes. When we were all finished I said to Riley that we showed the care value of community by helping out around the school.  I also showed the leadership trait of Integrity because I was fair to the people playing.

Today at lunch time I had band practice. When I got there I saw that Jak was there, I walked into the radio station room and got out a stand then tuned my guitar. I helped Emily out with her drum set. Then we started to practice, we practiced can't stop the feeling. It was going alright. Mr Rule said that we would be preforming in three weeks and that made me a little bit nervous. Later on Mr Rule made only the guitars play and then I got really worried about preforming because I noticed that it wasn't that great, but that helped me want to motivate myself to keep practicing so I can get better and better. The care value I showed has excellence because I was trying my best.  I also showed the leadership trait of resilient's because when I got stuck I didn't give up.

Last Friday I asked my dad if I could go to his work for the day, he said yes. I had to get up really early to get to his work. When I was there I helped the receptionist print, scan and file a few things. While I was there I found out a lot about being an accountant, some of the things I learnt were that you have to be good at mathematics and have an analytical mind. After the day had finished I told my dad that his work is really fun but it isn't really for me. I linked this experience to school today when we were looking up some careers that we might like to do. I showed the care value of excellence because I put myself out of my comfort,  I also showed the leadership trait of resilient's because when I got stuck I didn't give up.
